French fashion designer, Jean Paul Gaultier will finally be getting his first museum retrospective, and it’s going to be in Canada. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) will launch “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” on June 17th and will run until October 2nd. The retrospects will have 120 haute couture dresses and ready-to-wear pieces (women’s and men’s) made between 1976 and 2011. There will also be sketches for costumes, theatre and movies, audiovisual clips of films, concerts, ballets, fashion shows and stage shows. A collection of art photography by such renowned artists as Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, Bettina Rheims, Paolo Roversi, Mario Testino, Pierre & Gilles, David LaChapelle, Steven Klein, Ellen Von Unwerth and Robert Doisneau will also be on display.
It’s great to see Canadian museums bringing in fashion exhibits for us to see. Hopefully Toronto will jump on the bandwagon and bring in some more exhibits, but until then, it looks like we are heading to Montreal, which isn’t so bad! The exhibit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from until October 2, 2011.
