We didn’t know much about Canadian designer Heather Lawton who was debuting her collection at LG Fashion Week. After a quick Google search we learned she grew up on the east coast in Prince Edward Island, and by 2006 she set off to study in New York at Parsons: The New School for Design. We were excited to see what she had brought back for us in Toronto.
The studio was the choice venue for this debut collection, with the venues dark atmosphere and long, black curtains engulfing the main entrance it was a perfect backdrop for the Gothic inspired clothing. The colour pallet consisted of all black, with the designer playing up her use of textures and fabrics to keep the monotone look interesting. Although some of the clothes resembled a few pieces we have seen from other designers collections, we can’t deny this fresh talent knows who her client is and plays with in that frame work. With the use of heavy, dark eye makeup, hip-length white wigs and dramatic music pulsating in the background, we can see this designer has a clear cut direction on how she wants to deliver her show. This first show impressed us for her first round of LG Fashion Week, and we look forward to see what she has for us to see in her next collection. Hopefully she will break-out of the monochrome, basic black area and have a little bit of fun experimenting with colour for the spring/summer season.
