The high-fashion mag has found itself on the receiving end of rampant criticism over the publication’s November cover, which features The Heat star Melissa McCarthy. The magazine’s recent cover is part of their annual Women In Hollywood collection. This year’s covers also feature Reese Witherspoon, Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. However it’s Melissa McCarthy’s cover that has come under the microscope.
While the 43-year-old actress undoubtedly looks stunning in the shot, critics are slamming Elle for covering up the curvy actress, who’s barely showing any skin while bundled up in a charcoal Marina Rinaldi coat. Critics point to the the other covers, which feature the actress showing skin or in tight designer clothing, as a stark contrast to Melissa’s shoot.
Since this story went viral, Elle Magazine has responded:
“On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover,” a spokesperson for the Elle said in a statement. “We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.”
Although we do think McCarthy looks beautiful on the cover, we do wonder what choices the stylist brought for the actress to choose from. Some websites are reporting that this controversy could just be a way to drum up controversy to encourage magazine sales.
