A law that requires people to keep their pants from ‘sagging’ or showing underwear has started to sweep across counties and communities of America recently.
The latest county to outlaw saggy bottoms is Olca, Florida where City Council woman Mary Rich has been vehemently opposed to saggy pants for over 5 years. She recently led the fight to have the ban take effect, following a growing list of other municipalities doing the same, and the law was passed by a unanimous vote.
Under the new law, pants found to be two inches or lower than waistlines will constitute an offense punishable by six months in jail and/ or $500 in fines. The new rules apply to city owned or leased properties such as sidewalks, streets, parks, sports, city buildings, recreation and public transportation facilities and parking lots.
Councilwoman Mary Rich tried to get pants legislation passed in 2009 but she couldn’t get anyone to second her motion. This year she not only got the bill introduced, but it passed unanimously. “We try to be a nice, clean city,” she said. “I think it’ll help clean it up some.”
However not everyone sounded as thrilled about the high-trouser rule. “I think this is a form of harassment,” said Ocala resident Curt Brown. “[It] gets you pulled to the side, [so they can] harass you, search you and have a right to do whatever they want to.”
US presidential candidate Barack Obama, speaking just before the 2008 US Presidential Election appeared on MTV and said that laws banning the practice of wearing low-slung pants that expose one’s underwear were “a waste of time … Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What’s wrong with that? Come on. Some people might not want to see your underwear. I’m one of them.”
We also aren’t big fans of the sagging pants trend. All you need to do is see a sweat stained ass crack in a pair of boxers to really get turned off of by this trend. Its basically the socks and sandals look with more intimate revelations, but hey, some people love the sock and sandal look, so we can see why sagging pants has become such a huge trend.
We decided to do a little investigating into the “Sagging” trend to track down where it originates and how it came to be such a social and fashion statement among many people today.
