A jail in Michigan has decided to change prison jumpsuits from the standard issue orange to classic stripes because of the popularity of Netflix’s hit show Orange is the New Black.
The sheriff of the jail decided to overhaul the orange uniforms, citing that the show has turned the prison outfits into a popular fashion statement among inmates and the general public.
‘It’s because as you see shows on television, like Orange Is The New Black, some people think it’s cool to look like an inmate of the Saginaw County Jail with wearing all orange jumpsuits out at the mall or in public.’ Sheriff William Federspiel s quoted by a local County newspaper.
We decided that the black-and-white stripes would be the best way to go because it signifies ‘jail inmate,’ and I don’t see people out there wanting to wear black-and-white stripes.
‘They’ve been very verbal. A lot of them have said, ”We don’t like wearing black-and-white stripes”. And my response is, ”Too bad. Don’t come to jail”.
The sheriff says the new monochrome jumpsuits, which last for about two to three years, cost $11.73 apiece.
