John Galliano has joined Maison Martin Margiela as creative director.
Renzo Rosso, the Italian entrepreneur and president of OTB, which owns the house, announced the appointment recently. Galliano’s first show, for the “artisanal line” will be held during Paris couture week in January. The artisanal line, formerly designed by Matthieu Blazy, is the house’s closest thing to haute couture.
The appointment to creative director for Masion Martin Margiela will certainly be seen as a comeback moment for Galliano, since we reported that the designer was fired by Dior and later convicted by a Paris court for perpetrating a drunken anti-Semitic outburst in a bar in 2011. He has since made very public apologies and has asked for forgiveness.
He has received counselling from Abraham Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League while facing his “demons” and addictions to alcohol and drugs.
While public outcry over the offence was swift and powerful, the designer still had friends in high places. Toronto Is Fashion told readers that famed designer Oscar de la Renta gave Galliano a one-season “design residency” for the fall 2013 collection.
This new appointment to creative director will surely have people talking and watching. With the wisdom of fifteen years experience of Christian Dior’s couture, many hope Galliano brings new and innovative designs to the runway. Only time will tell. Let’s just hope he skips the red wine tirades that have plagued him thus far.
