UPDATED: Jewellery Stolen During Cannes Film Festival

Chopard Palme Dor Award Best Film Cannes

According to French authorities, a million dollars’ worth of jewellery has been stolen while a movie premiere was starting for the Cannes Film Festival. The Chopard jewels were to be worn by celebrities attending the festival and were reported missing from the room of a Chopard employee at Hotel Novel. Apparently the hotel rooms’ security box had been smashed open and the jewels taken.

The Swiss luxury jeweler is known well on the red carpets around the world, but especially in France where he has designed the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or award presented to best film. Oddly enough, the jewellery went missing the same time as Sophia Coppola’s film ‘The Bling Ring’ was premiering. So far there are no suspects in the case.

UPDATE: Turns out, the original estimate on the dollar value of the stolen jewellery was much lower than previously thought. Originally it was thought $53 million of jewels were stolen, but the estimate has climbed to a staggering $136 million! An armed gunman walked into the hotel and made off with the precious jewels. No suspect has been captured at time of posting.
